Red Tape & Regulation
Home | Lobbying and Representation | Red Tape & Regulation
Since 1997, red tape has cost British businesses nearly £40billion. The burden of complying with regulation is one of the loudest complaints from employers and they are still waiting for the Government to reduce red tape and regulation.
The Burdens Barometer
The British Chambers of Commerce have produced a 'Burdens Barometer' which calculates the cost of compliance using the Governments own regulatory Impact assessment (RIA) figures. Click here to view
The Chamber recognises that regulation is necessary, but want it to be well targeted and fully thought through. In particular we want to see that:
- Regulation is only implemented when the benefits outweigh the costs in RIA
- Pre-legislation consultation must be carried out widely, be fully considered and not lightly dismissed.
- Consultations should be open and not just a narrow list of options for consul tees to choose from
- National government should "think small first" bearing in mind the disproportionate impact that red tape has on small businesses.
We continue to lobby on behalf of the business community and encourage the Government to not enforce unnecessary burdens on employers.
