Business Crime

Business Crime robs the British economy of billions of pounds every year, not to mention the negative impact on business performance caused by disruption to trading and investment. Nearly two-thirds of all businesses have been a victim of at least one crime in the previous twelve months, while almost half had suffered more than one crime. The impact and cost of crime continues to blight business and the average cost of crime per business is now over £8000 p.a.

But did you know that companies in Yorkshire & Humber are more likely to have experienced at least one incidence of business crime in the past year than in any other region of the UK and they feel it is constraining inward investment and business expansion?

A major survey of 644 businesses from across the region by Yorkshire & Humber Chambers of Commerce provides strong evidence that business crime is ‘invisible’ and often goes unreported, with firms believing they are seen to be a significantly lower priority than many other forms of crime. Two-thirds of businesses experienced business crime in the past year and whilst much of it was low level offences such as vandalism or damage to property this carries a real financial cost. Only a third of businesses who experienced crimes reported all incidents to the Police.

Consequently Leeds Chamber proactively encourages and supports national lobbying efforts to have crime against business included in the Key Performance Indicators for the police.

Locally, Leeds Chamber continues to take part in meetings organised by different bodies that are looking to tackle business crime. RaCBA (Retail and Commercial Business Action Group) lobby's to wards making the city centre a better place for businesses. More...
